Global Postgraduates: The Changing Nature of Postgraduate Supervision

Abstract

Universities around the world are adjusting to the new age postgraduate student. Postgraduates of the 21st Millennium present new challenges for the supervision process. The increasing trend of distance learners, off-campus students, work-based, off-shore and increasing numbers of part time postgraduate students necessitates a reconceptualisation of a more flexible and mixed mode study delivery by universities. Diverse multi-campus institutions are becoming the accepted practice rather than the exception.

This workshop will be an interactive session where the presenters will share their collective experiences with global postgraduates. In addition, the presenters will highlight ways in which they have reconceptualised their role as supervisor to adapt to the changing demands. A Needs Analysis Schedule (NAS) to facilitate and individualise postgraduate supervision, will be presented. Areas to be covered include:

    • Globalisation of postgraduate degrees
    • Geographic isolation of students
    • Cultural diversity
    • What constitutes a postgraduate thesis
    • Multiliteracy issues
    • Group supervision
    • Communication technology requirements and competence of both student and supervisor.
