Literacy for the Boys
Abstract
This paper is for educators who are interested in the teaching
and learning issues regarding boys and literacy learning. It
presents one school's approach in Australia dealing with the
overwhelming number of issues related to poor literacy performance
through a professional development program for teachers based
on a broader definition of literacy that takes into account the
complex interrelated elements of class, ethnicity, gender, race
and socio economic background.
Bionote
Patrizia Fattor is the Coordinator of Educational Support
Services at Parade College, a large Catholic secondary college
for boys. She has been teaching for almost twenty years with
experience in the primary, secondary and adult sectors, and has
facilitated and participated in various projects such as, the
National Professional Development Project, an RMIT project Teaching
in the New World of Literacy, and the Deakin University, Middle
Years Literacy Research Project. She is also in the final stages
of her Master of Education Degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute
of Technology in Melbourne (RMIT University), Australia.
