A Multiliteracies Project: Designing Enterprising Futures

Abstract:

The proposed paper will report on an investigation into the potential contribution of a Multiliteracies pedagogical approach to enterprise education and the development of an enterprising culture, by discussing the results of two classroom-based case studies where learners used multimodal forms of communication to design their own meanings about their future endeavours.

The research case studies revealed that tasks, which allow for innovation, creativity and risk-taking across multiple modes, produce certain enterprising behaviours. This claim is based on the New London Group's (2000) positioning of a Multiliteracies pedagogy as a means of achieving innovative behaviours and practices, which is a prerequisite for productive social futures. The generation of an innovation culture is essential to maintain a competitive advantage in an age where the creative application of knowledge is the new source of capital.
