Roles of Imagination in Learning

Abstract

In this workshop presentation, three speakers will address different roles of imagination in learning, and give demonstrations of how these roles can be deployed in everyday learning. Kieran Egan will outline prominent characteristics of both primary and intermediate age children's imaginations. He will then show how these can be engaged in learning regular curriculum material. Jean Warburton will argue that engaging the learner's imagination requires a reconsideration of the way we teach children, prepare teachers, and structure curricula. She will demonstrate some prominent procedures we can deploy to engage imaginations, prepare teachers, and shape curricula. Geoffrey Madoc-Jones will draw significantly on the work of Paul Ricoeur, to argue that the imagination should be considered less in terms of vision than in terms of language. He will describe principles for educating children in a poetic tradition as necessary for the full development of linguistic expression and learning capacity.
