The New Literacies in Web-Based Learning Environment
Abstract:
This paper will present the result of a study on students'
perceived barriers and issues while participating in online education
and their implications for the new literacies in web-based learning
environment. The paper will begin by analyzing the main features
of the web-based learning environment, contrasting them to features
of the traditional learning environment. These features include
types of technology and media used, forms of communication, processes
and strategies of reading and writing, ways of conducting research,
and the changing role of teachers and students. The paper will
then examine students' perceptions of barriers and issues while
learning in web-based environment. Through survey and interview,
both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed.
Students expressed various barriers and issues while using the
Internet in their learning process. The paper will conclude by
addressing the most important implications of the findings for
learners, teachers, and researchers, focusing on new literacy
skills regarding reading, writing, communication and research
in web-based learning environment, as well as the concepts of
situated learning and constructivist self-directed learning.
