Proposed Education Programme to Promote Cultural Harmonic Environment in Schools of Hong Kong

Abstract

The influx of young new arrivals from Mainland China to Hong Kong has become a very hot issue in the city after July 1997.

Local research findings indicate that these newly arrived students met stereotype and prejudice in all walks of life, and it is found that such undesirable relationship between students from different cultural background has created problematic situation in schools.

In order to help schools to establish a cultural harmonic environment, an education programme is proposed, which aims at developing multicultural attitude of both the newly arrived students and local born Hong Kong students. Based on Bennett's model (Bennett, 1990), four core values and six fundamental goals on curriculum planning is suggested. In addition, a three-stage education programme is designed, in which students, teachers, school administrators, as well as students' parents are involved.
