Distance Learners and the New Educational Technologies: Promise and Practice
The landscape of available educational technologies
provides interesting possibilities for overcoming geographical
distance and for enhancing learning for isolated students. At
the same time these technologies present challenges for the design
of effective distance systems and for teachers. The roles of
learner and teacher change in such environments as interactions
increase. This paper considers pedagogical and practical issues
in using online and telephone communities to provide an effective
learning environment for tertiary students. It draws on practical
examples from general distance teaching and from a professional
course of study for preparing teachers for New Zealand primary
schools. Kathy Broadley has been a tertiary distance educator for over 25 years and teaches in this field as well as in educational psychology. She has wide educational interests including reading instruction, adult teaching and teacher education.
