Like Me? The Employment Styles of School Principals Hiring Beginning Teachers
Abstract Schools in New Zealand are self-managing and hire
their own personnel, including beginning teachers who bring with
them a supervisory allowance for one year. School principals
interview and hire teachers, sometimes with a sub-committee of
the school board of trustees but often without. This research
examines the supposition that principals have differing styles
that influence their selection of beginning teachers. There may
well be implications for pre-service programmes. Guy Broadley is a former school teacher, school board administrator and educational psychologist with lengthy experience in teacher education and wide research interests. He currently has responsibility for a final year pre-service teacher education paper containing the major teaching practicum.
