School-Community Partnerships: New Learning for New Times
Abstract Indigenous Australians (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples) have for generations been the victims of education policies and practices which did not recognise differences between groups of students or the diversity within them. The workshop will explore recent experiences in Queensland state education in seeking improved educational outcomes through the development of partnership agreements between schools and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It will explore case studies of school-community compacts which are attempting to respond to critical issues at the local level, including building the capacity to generate sustainable solutions to the range of social, economic and historical challenges which impact on school participation and student learning. Key issues and tensions in the development of school-community partnerships within a systemic framework will be canvassed, focussing on issues of language and literacy, culture and identity, and new opportunities to learn from and with the partners in the process. Bionote Kay Boulden is Manager of the Partners for Success Strategy Community in Education Queensland. Denise Turnbull has extensive experience in early childhood classrooms with immigrant and indigenous ESL students. She is developing assessment tools to measure language and literacy development for indigenous ESL learners.
