New Doctorates for New Literacies
Abstract Forecasters looking for trends that may help define the shape of the future almost uniformly describe a world dominated by an information-based technologically interdependent society. Coupled with this they see what has been described as an exponential explosion of knowledge. Tomorrow's adults will likely engage in a lifetime of perpetual learning. Adults will need to learn how to continuously synthesize information multidimensionally. The role of universities in preparing leaders in education to engage in this knowledge-rich scenario for the future could be pivotal. The structure of the university could very well change dramatically as students continue in what will become a process of life-long learning. Strong programs, collectively defined, will be needed that are designed to develop the leaders who can transform learning using a new definition of literacy and technology. It may very well be that the impact of tomorrow on the structures of schools today will depend on leaders who see the pull of the future. The need has never been greater for a program that can prepare educational leaders in the San Diego region. The new San Diego State University-University of San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Education (Ed.D.) was created with this in mind. The focus of the new program would revolve around leadership in literacy and technology. The doctoral candidates would be selected because they possessed knowledge of either technology or literacy and how these two specializations can play a dominant role in determining what happens in classrooms. They will be the leaders who meet the formidable task of defining policy and programs that address the merged role of literacy and technology in the years to come. This paper will be a description of the development and inauguration of this merged doctoral program utilizing a new definition of literacy and technology. Bionote The two presenters are the co-directors of the new joint doctorate in education in San Diego. This is a program that brings together the resources of a large public university and a smaller private university in creating a new, vital partnership to deliver a doctoral program for tomorrow's leaders in education in California.
