Abstract In recent years much emphasis has been placed on standards- based educational reform throughout the United States. The Center for the Study of Standards-Based Educational Reform was established in 1999 at Coastal Carolina University in order to conduct research dealing with standards-based reform especially in the State of South Carolina. This paper will report the results of three studies recently conducted by the Center. The studies each involve middle level education, student diversity, and selected variables related to success on the South Carolina assessment system. The studies will be analyzed and compared with significant commonalities noted. In addition, the progress of the State of South Carolina in implementing standards-based instruction and assessment will be briefly described. Bionotes Dr Bedwell is Professor of Education at Coastal Carolina University. He serves as Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Standards-Based Educational Reform located in the College of Education. Dr Hunt is Professor and Interim Dean of the School of Education at Coastal Carolina University. He also serves as Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Standards- Based Educational Reform.
