Pre-graduate and Post-graduate Workplace Learning

Abstract

In this paper workplace learning among pre-graduate and post-graduate teachers, social workers, nurses and doctors are presented and discussed. The paper refers to research projects that are finished as well as research in progression, including non-participant, objectifying observations and interviews with special attention to chosen activities and abilities. Theoretically the research is inspired by the work of Basil Bernstein (the pedagogic device and the pedagogic discourse) and Pierre Bourdieu (habitus, field, capital) and tries to answer questions like:

1. Who are (observations) and what is seen (interviews) as the mentors (teachers) for the pre-graduate and post-graduate learner in action?

2. Is it possible to describe common (and different) ways and principles of workplace learning between different occupational groups?

Finding shows among other things that workplace learning is much more complex than often understood by the educational system, learners (and different theories about learning). Progression in the professional learning process is related to misrecognizing certain types of knowledge and mentors. They learn a lot although lack of legitimate mentors and theory. Workplace learning involves learning from space and from 'below' eg. from students, children, patients as well as from other occupational groups at the workplace.
