Networked Information Communication Literacy Skills (NICLS):
New Learning Skills for E-Learning Environments

Abstract

This paper proposes describes the design, development and evaluation of a basic Networked Information and Communication Literacy Skills (NICLS) module for a Continuing Professional Distance Education (CPDE) master's degree course. Because of the required Information Technology (IT) background, it was assumed, in previous years, that students would posses these skills and no particular training was planned or designed. This resulted in under-usage of existing online resources and consequently under-performance and failure to match student and tutor expectations. The need for such courses as pre-modules for on-line distance education programmes is presented and discussed, based an initial investigation of needs. Furthermore, and as part of the design process, the paper discusses and defines information and communication literacy and its main aspects. A constructivist instructional design framework was used to develop the NICLS course. The corresponding design development and testing is presented in detail. Finally, the evaluation results (both qualitative and quantitative) are discussed.
