Abstract This paper reports a research finding of an alternative approach to learning literacy in Malay language in an urban school in Malaysia. The purpose of the research is to test the efficacy of the immersion method in helping low achievers to master some of the basic skills in the language, gain confidence in their ability to learn and achieve, and enjoy learning. Evaluation of the effects of the method and materials used for the experimental group shows gained in the literacy skills of the children. Bionote Mahzan Arshad (Phd.) is currently a lecturer at the Department of Language Education, Faculty of Education, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He specialises on the teaching of Malay Language and Literature.
