Accelerated Learning for Everyone
Dr Tony Owens
Faculty of Education, Language and Community Services, RMIT
University, Australia
Abstract
Teachers who use practices that accelerate learning have evidence
that their students" learning is enhanced and retained for
longer. In the past 30 years research into brain function and
human potential have been converted to teaching practices that
greatly enhance the learning experience and effects. Major contributors
have been brain researchers Sperry, Ornstein and Diamond, 17
century educator Comenius who promoted active, playful and colourful
learning with objects and pictures, Lozanov who developed suggestopedia,
Gardner who broadened the concept of intelligence, and Erickson
who employed sensory learning styles to maximise communication.
Teachers who take positive and holistic perspectives make a daily
impact on their students through application of these and other
advances.
The workshop will provide a window on information and experience
with ideas and procedures that can produce joyful and effective
learning. Participants will establish a state conducive to learning
and use methods that promote information access, retention and
recall. Activities will be based on practices and theories of
the above pioneers and writings and workshops of practitioners
around the world. Participants will receive information on readings,
experienced practitioners, resources and current research projects.
(Workshop 90 minutes)
