Abstract

This paper attempts to trace the challenges faced in providing education to women in India. While modernization and information dissemination have increased the awareness of importance of educating women, social conditioning, imposed stereotyped roles and exploitation have prevented them from being an intergeral part of socio-economic development of the nation. To them learning has been only to the extent of fulfilling roles determined by tradition and culture. Therefore the results from the educational policies and incentives offered by the Government of india are still far from satisfactory. The paper also suggests that such a challenge can be tackled when: a) the society becomes more sensitive to the needs of women and discharges its responsibilty fully. b) women themselves become aware and be bold enough to claim their status.
