Dr Grace Lynch

Manager Quality Programs, Faculty of Education, Language and Community Services, RMIT University, Melbourne, Victoria

Abstract

As industry is demanding more and more just in time training, educational institutions must be quick to provide training that is immediately relevant to the day to day operations of that specific client. While industry is willing and eager to provide training and professional development for their employees, they also want it to be in the least disruptive manner to the normal operating of the workplace.

The Faculty of Education, Language and Community Services of RMIT University in conjunction with Thiess Environmental Services (TES) developed a training program for approximately 50 water and sewer operators, and their supervisors to learn how to operate effectively a new electronic data transfer system. The operators moved from a paper based reporting environment to electronic reporting from the worksite via laptop computers with remote modems. The change in the manner of reporting helped the company to win an Australian Quality Award for improved services to clients. Rather than explore specifics of the actual training the workshop will expand on partnerships with industry and workbased programs can be initiated, developed, conducted and evaluated.
