Abstract

Words evoke images.. images beg to be named. What are the effects and consequences for those with a first and second language and what is the role of memory? Rather than approaching this in a theoretical way this paper presents a number of subjective encounters with language in which imagery evoked by words in my first and second language, Dutch and English, was explored. Personal experiences share terrain with the universal experience of being bi-cultural, such as for instance emotional aspects of language, memory, notions of 'home' etc. These aspects and others are explored through a set of images which together form an art work titled: Overseas Parcels, which was part of a travelling group exhibition titled "Lingo, Getting the Picture" curated by Lucienne Fontanez of Brisbane.

The presentation focuses on this art work and is predominantly visual, including slides, and an elaboration of the aspects of the migrant experience as expressed in these images.
