How Can University Structuring, Moves to Flexible Learning and a Customer Service Focus be Used to Trigger More Student-Centred Approaches to Learning?

Michele Scoufis, Lecturer, Department of Employment Relations, UWS, Nepean, NSW.

Abstract

How can university restructuring, moves to flexible learning and a customers service focus, be used to trigger more student centred approaches to learning?

In the proposed workshop participants will be asked to share their perceptions on:

(i) the needs of our tertiary students in the changing tertiary environments and how we might best respond to these;
(ii) the potential incompatibility of students' needs for social integration, campus identification and greater contact with academic staff and moves to flexible independent learning modes;
(iii) ways to create multicultural learning spaces in the new university environments.

Using a group facilitation process similar to that currently being used at UWS Nepean with cross faculty academic staff, participants will be asked to compare their responses with those already gained from UWS academics.
