The ESL Curriculum Project: Planning for English Language Learning in Schools in Victoria.

Janet Saker, Senior Project Officer, ESL Section, LOTE, ESL and Multicultural Education Branch Schools Program Division, Department of Education Melbourne, VIC.

Abstract

The ESL Course Advice project has produced documents to assist teachers to better cater for the needs of their ESL learners, from Prep (K) to Year 10. This workshop will give an overview of the work that has been completed to date. The documents are written to the structure of the ESL Companion to the English Curriculum and Standards Framework, which described stages of English language development. Materials have been developed which cover the range of ESL learning stages and contexts, primary and secondary sectors, intensive and mainstream settings, beginning and post new-arrival students.

The workshop will also focus on the material produced for the teachers of post-new arrival students in the primary years. This material provides advice to mainstream classroom teachers of ESL learners, a particularly challenging ESL teaching context. The document encourages teachers to be aware of the language and learning history of their students, and to use this information for classroom planning. A format that can be used to plan units of work will be introduced to participants. The format assists teachers to plan for English language learning within topics. This approach caters for the needs of all students, but is particularly useful for ESL learners. Assessment issues will be discussed.
