Aboriginal Students Can Succeed at Secondary School

Abstract

The retention rate of Aboriginal students has improved over the past fifteen years but it is still significantly less than that for all other students. Little work has been done to identify the factors that have helped the few Aboriginal students who have stayed at school and succeeded. The author used an assets analysis orientation and case study methodology, within the constructivist paradigm, to examine these factors and their interrelationships. The findings have implications for future research in Aboriginal Education, system providers of education for Aboriginal students, schools and individual teachers. Participants will have the opportunity to experience using the causal network matrix model to conceptualise the complex interrelationships between the various identity, school, home, ability and personal factors that were important in ten Aboriginal students staying at school and succeeding. Participants will also be able to examine these factors across cases.
