Professional Development Resources for Anti-Racist Teaching

David Richards, Senior Education Officer (Educational Resources and Training), TAFE NSW Multicultural Education Unit.

Abstract

The TAFE NSW Multicultural Education Unit, in collaboration with out counterparts at the Department of School Education, is working on, first, a revision to our highly acclaimed anti-racist training package Multiculturalism in Conflict and second, a sequel which will be more skills-based to complement the approach of the original kit. The aim is not merely to raise awareness, but to develop skills from a sound knowledge base. To go beyond problem posing, the sequel will have four inter-related themes:

  • cultural diversity
  • anti-racist strategies
  • cross-cultural communication skills

culturally-inclusive teaching strategies.

The new package will again follow the successful format of trigger videos complemented by a trainer's manual. However, there will be no debate and any interviews with role models will be incorporated into documentary-style collages. Dramatic triggers will also be retained. To date about ten scenarios have been drafted.
