The Teaching of National Language (Malay Language) to Multiracial Secondary School Student Through the Experiential - Appreciation Approach

Abstract

This working paper is contextualized in the development of Malaysian national language attitude towards Malay language and approaches to teaching the national language to multi-ethnic and multi-cultural students. The study examines the effectiveness of approaches to teaching the national language through and Experiential-Appreciation Approach and an Eclectic approach to two different groups of Form Four students. The Experiential-Appreciation Approach is a new approach to the teaching of Malaysian national language. The study directly related to students' experience to reading, essay writing, grammar and an appreciation of national language. The working paper will review the historical background of the Malaysia pluarlist society, the multilingual school system, reports on the National Language Policy Acts, the implementation of Malaysian National Language as a main medium of instruction, the current development of the Malaysian education system, the National Education Philosophy and the National Ideology. As a pluralist society the implementation of national language augers well in the development national unity and national integration among the Malays, Chinese, Indian and other ethnic groups in Malaysia.
