The Impact of Word Processing on Student Attitudes and L2 LiteracyHajar Bt. Abdul Rahim, School of Humanities, University of Malaysia AbstractResearch on CALL (computer-assisted language learning), namely word-processing in the language classroom, indicates that this mode of learning facilitates the writing process. Research findings on students who are native speakers of English show that those who use word-processing have more positive attitudes towards writing than those who do not. Positive attitude motivates language learning. In the L2 (second/foreign language) scene, it is generally understood that students' low language competency negatively affects their attitude towards writing in the target language. Given the positive impact word-processing seem to have on native speakers, a study was conducted to investigate whether word-processing in the language classroom has the same effect on learners of English as L2. This paper presents the findings of the study and explores the potential of using CALL to boost students' motivation to write in the target language and in turn promote their L2 literacy. |
