Mapping Teachers' Work, Charting New Futures.

Abstract

This presentation reports on research conducted during 1997 on the Impact of the Open Training Market on TAFE teachers' work. The research involved interviews with 45 teachers in 4 Institutes of TAFE in Queensland. The research sought to identify the nature of teachers work in the context of a competitive training market and describe how the nature of teachers work had changed. The research also sought views of teachers on professional development. The research identified significant polarisation of staff attitudes and experiences between staff. Significant confusion and about the role of teachers in the context of flexible delivery was also identified in the course of the research. The need for long term career planning with accompanying staff development opportunities was also identified as being critical in equipping staff to meet the challenge of a competitive training environment.
