Internationalisation, Knowledge and Techniques of Power in the Academic Acculturation of International Students

Dr Peter Ninnes, Learning Development Centre, University of Western Sydney..

Abstract

The progressive internationalisation of higher education in Australia through among other things the increase in numbers of international students studying in Australian universities has been accompanied by an increasing awareness of the problems these students may encounter regarding living and studying in a new academic context. This paper draws on case studies of the academic acculturation of students from India in an Australian University's MBA program. It goes beyond previous analyses by exploring the role Australian universities play in the maintenance of hegemonic knowledge relations and in particular the techniques of power which are used to encourage students to adopt dominant forms of knowledge acquisition and analysis.

The paper discusses the relevance of the findings to the processes, practices and policies of internationalisation in Australian universities.
