The Literacy/Language Program of Hornsby Heights Public SchoolAnn Morrice, Hornsby Heights Public School, NSW. AbstractAs a speaker at the 1995 LERN Conference in Townsville I introduced my Literacy program which had been implemented for approx. 6mths. This program is based on Wells, and Vygotsky's Interactionist Theory. Community members are brought into the school in Year Kindergarten to Year 3 to work for up to 2 hours a day on developing literacy levels of students. Community members are not only parents, but represent the older members from Probus, Viewclubs and other groups in the broader area. The program has been running in my school for 3 years. No child is deemed at risk. All children are reading and writing above their chronological age and most 1 year or more above. Several other schools are implementing the program with similar results. In Semester 2 of the year I will be working with Bryce Courtenay and BookPower to research the program across a broader spectrum of students - Redfern, Moree, Cabramatta and Mt Druitt. After a meeting with the Premier next week I will be more informed as to the NSW Government support for the project. An opportunity to be involved in this Conference would add to my research base and allow me to see at first hand local communities. |
