Deconstructing Rosy Dock: A Critical Approach to Teaching Text

Carolyn Millard, Curriculum Officer: English R-12, Department for Education and Children's Services South Australia.

Abstract

This session uses the picture book, The Story of Rosy Dock, written and illustrated by Jeannie Baker, to discuss ways of using critical teaching approaches with students from the early years to year 10. The activities described will support teachers to help students think about: how the written text and pictures work together to suggest particular messages to readers; the linguistic structures and features of the text; cultural understandings in relation to the text; and how to enjoy a book while engaging in critical talk about it. The session will provide teachers with the opportunity to:

  • discuss the use of a contemporary literature text in English classrooms years 1-10
  • investigate ways of incorporating critical approaches to literature
  • view and discuss the video version of the text
  • talk about the particular understandings groups of students can develop through the use of picture books in the classroom.
