Abstract

The Victorian Department of Education established a Counter-Racism Project at the beginning of 1997 to provide a framework for addressing issues of race and racism in schools and communities. It is developing resources and strategies to help schools foster positive attitudes to cultural diversity and to provide learning environments which are free from racial discrimination and harassment. The project is a cooperative venture involving a number of branches in the Department as well as the Catholic and Independent school sectors and subject associations. It is building upon already existing initiatives, expertise and resources to create a cohesive and practical strategy for schools. A presentation will be made on aspects of the strategy followed by a workshop discussion in which it is anticipated that representatives from the various school systems will share in their approaches to the issue of racism.
