A Model For Learner-Centred Assessmet: Cross-cutural Communication for Small BusinessRosemary Livingstone, Chief Education Officer, Educational Policy and Review Services, TAFE NSW. AbstractThis workshop presents for discussion a model of learner-centred assessment in cross-cultural communication. The learners here are adult indigenous people wanting to establish a small business, or already operating a small business and wanting further training. The model was designed for the NSW module in the 1996 ANTA-funded course, Training for Indigenous Peoples in Small Business in Rural and Remote Areas. The model responds to the national reforms in VET. It meets the requirements for flexibly based assessment in CBT mode - it provides authentic and holistic assessment, emphasising problem-solving skills which apply an organic model of the communication process. The model is based on the principle that metacognition empowers the learner to develop communication skills that are transferable and life-long. The adult indigenous learners are placed at the centre of the process, developing skills of self-reflection to observe and report on their communication skills as they interact with indigenous and non-indigenous people in the context of small business and their communities. Rosemary Livingstone has worked extensively in France and Australia in the fields of cross-cultural communication, communication skills training, English as a Foreign Language and English for Speakers of Other Languages. She has conducted applied research into key competencies, and has broad experience in curriculum development in TAFE NSW and nationally. |
