Developing and Maintaining Asia Literacy in Schools: The Work of the Asia Education Foundation

Julie Dyer, Asia Education Foundation, State Advisor Victoria.
Kay Mitchell, Asia in Schools Project Officer, Asia Education Foundation Advisor, Northern Territory.

Abstract

In Asian eyes, the last few hundred years are a pause, a depletion of energy, and Asia is now on the move again and taking in Western science and technology, evolving once more into cultures which are strong and resilient. For this reason alone, we must incorporate them into our learning. The second level is to accept the fact that we live in Asia, and if we are going to survive it will be by being knowledgeable about Asia, by being Asia-literate. S. Fitzgerald, 1997.

Studies of Asia do not involve the substitution of Asian perspectives for those of Europe, but they do require the incorporation of Asian voices within the Australian curriculum. M. Garbuthceon-Sing, 1995

This workshop will provide an overview of the work of the Asia Education Foundation (AEF) 1993-1997 in schools and institutions across Australia. The Asia Education Foundation has three main programs - Curriculum Materials Development Program, the Partnerships and Professional Develop and the Access Asia Network of Schools Program.

It will also examine the concept of developing an Asia literate school through selected case studies of curriculum, school and community change drawn from the AEF Access Asia network of schools across Australia.
