Wanyaarri - Indigenous Australia in the ESL Classroom

Susan Cornish, Program Support and Development Services, NSW Adult Migrant English Service.

Abstract

Wanyaarri is a new ESL teaching resource which has been developed by the NSW Adult Migrant English Service in collaboration with indigenous people and communities. It is designed to encourage adult and young adult immigrants to learn about indigenous Australia through the development of language, literacy and numeracy skills.

Wanyaarri offers non-indigenous Australians the opportunity to hear nine indigenous people tell their stories and to begin to understand the richness and the diversity of Australia's indigenous cultures.

Participants will be taken through extracts from the 78 minute video and will examine how the personal stories, cultural information and broader issues addressed provide a rich resource for language learning at all levels.

They will also be taken through the teacher's resource book which includes sample units of work and examines the practical issues in integrating indigenous studies in the ESL classroom.
