Patterns and Characteristics of the Young Committed Reader in a Multilingual and Multicultural SettingDr Gitu Chakravarthy, School of Humanities, University Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia. AbstractGiven the changing scenario of directions for education at the end of the century, there is a need to continually assess the realities of practices, especially in the context of basic literacy. As Malaysia makes rapid changes to processes towards new national goals, it is argued that policies need to be research-driven and accommodative of multiethnic and multilingual realities. This paper outlines findings of a recent survey of the reading habits and characteristics of children who frequent public and private libraries in Penang, Malaysia. It attempts to ascertain factors and trends that can be identified in the development of interest in reading, and motivation for the sustaining of such interests. It is hoped that the findings will provide policy-makers and educationists and parents with directions for the general development of interest and habits of reading among the young. |
