First Year at University: 'Now you are at University, you'd Better Know How to Learn'

Dr Jennie Bickmore-Brand, Director of the Adult Literacy Network Node in WA, Curtin University of Technology.

Abstract

This session will present findings to date of a research project which is monitoring the transition from secondary to tertiary level of Curtin university students. The project raises questions about what lecturers expect from students and whether students have to adjust their learning habits and literacy practices to the academic demands of each course. It also explores the ways in which lecturers make explicit the literacy conventions that are part of their discipline.
